Headband Braids - Four Ways (Hair Styles and Updo for Medium Hair)

A rainy day produces curly/frizzy hair…and a frustrating braid bar session. I think to date, this was the longest time I’ve ever spent taking pictures, braiding, trying another thing, rebraiding, trying something else. Friends, if you think this is always something easy that produces the results you see, rest assured that sometimes I have as many moments wanting to pull out my hair than trying to braid it.

As you’ll see from my pics, I decided it was high time to try to give you gals with naturally wavy/curly hair a few options, and so I slept with my hair wet last night. My hair is somewhat curly naturally, so I thought I’d give you a few options of things to do with braids, which don’t require straight hair to start.
Also, I know I talk about this a lot, but truly doing a braid with clean hair is SO much harder than a similar braid with 2, 3, or 4-day old hair. My process is typically:
Day 1 – Wash hair with shampoo and conditioner, blow out and straighten
Day 2 – Maybe add some product or dry shampoo
Day 3 – Half-up Braid
Day 4 – Up-do
I do workout everyday (these days its hot yoga), so on the days off from shampoo I will still rinse my hair and blow dry, or maybe add some conditioner and let it dry naturally. Today I decided to try and do a photoshoot with clean hair, and again I can say it was extremely frustrating to get things to look right. You might think it sounds gross, but I promise you, once you get into the routine you will thank me for how much more manageable things are.
As a side note, I tried a few different things before finally landing on the headband braids for curly hair, so I hope you like the results and can give it a try yourself. My hair is somewhat layered, so I tried several looks which focused on more topsy-turvy ponytails and found that the hair just ended up looking messy. If you have more success with those topsy-turvy styles (like this one): https://www.pinterest.com/pin/752241943979725229/, let me know what you did to make it work.

Braid Bar Box

As with most of my posts, you will be able to execute this look with the right tools, all of which are sold on my site, in the Braid Bar Box. Use the dry shampoo to get some grippiness to the hair, and also to keep your hair from looking greasy. You’ll need just one or two good grippy bobby pins, and one larger ponytail holder (unless you have thinner hair, and then you can use a clear elastic for the ponytail). As always, the rattail comb is particularly convenient to have on hand. All of the sprays have UV protection, and with braids such as this one, it’s a great way to give that hair some sun care.

Step-by-step Tutorial on Braided Hairstyles: Headband Braids Four Ways – Simple French Braid

You will need to know how to do French braids for this hairdo, so if you missed my blog post about with simple braids and braiding tips, feel free to refresh yourself here: https://sunqui.st/blogs/braid-bar/an-easy-weekday-braid-and-basic-braiding-tips

  1. Start by using a rattail comb to split out the front section of hair that you want braided. I find that about halfway back, right in front of my ear, seems to be a good place to split. Clip off the rest of your hair.

  2. Start with as deep a part as you can get away with to have the headband go all the way over the head. I can’t start too deeply on the other side as I don’t have a lot of hair on the right side of my head.. Separate out the section into three pieces.

  3. Braid the back piece over the middle and then the front piece over the middle. Add another piece from the sectioned out hair to the back section only.

  4. Continue to French braid, and only add new pieces to the back section.

  5. As you continue along, you will notice that the braid will flip over into what looks like a Dutch braid.

  6. Continuing braiding until all the hair is incorporated, and down to the bottom of your hair. I don’t tie off the hair with an elastic at this point so that it is easier to pancake out the braid.

  7. Using both hands, gently start separating out the hair wider and wider until you get to the desired loose look.

  8. Pull the braid back over your ear.

  9. If you are leaving the hair down remove the clip and simply bobby pin the hair underneath near the nape of the neck. I like to use two bobby pins in an “X” shape to secure the hair.

  10. Leave the hair down and style as desired. (Style 1)

  11. Alternately, unclip the hair and put the hair into a low ponytail. Tease the hair and spray to make it look a bit fuller. (Style 2)
